Whenever the occasion presented itself, my parents would waste no effort in showing me support, appreciation, and trust. They provided encouragement and requested that I get the best results with my studies. But when it came to rankings, they made it clear to me that, for them, I am as good as the one that ranked higher (by very little sometimes).

THE (true) STORY

In communist Romania, competition in school was fierce. Our families valued education more than anything and supported us to become achievers in every way they could. Even in primary school – at least in my school – the first prize was granted to a maximum of two pupils. Many of us were working hard for it all year long only to come very close but not just there yet.

Every time I visit my parents’ house I see a photo of myself taken at the festivities: a seven years old thin figure with a big, confident smile, holding tight on the books the teacher offered as a reward. I was wearing a natural flowers tiara, a privilege granted only to those ones that got the first prize. I had ranked second.

Very early on the day of the festivities, my grandfather would arrive from his village bringing flowers from his own garden – usually small perfumed red and pink carnations. My parents took over to create the tiara. To my amazement, it was ready when I woke up. What a joy!

This remains a vivid memory that I access whenever I need a boost of confidence. It’s immortalized in the after festivity group photo where I was smiling confidently with the tiara on my head knowing that, for my parents, I am a winner. Little cute fraud I may have been back then – but this was a wise and intelligent move my parents made to build the healthy self-esteem and drive in the adult I became.

I am not even sure if the “parenting” word existed 30 years ago, and I haven’t heard of people reading books on how to raise their children. My parents were guided by love and intuition and what a great outcome they contributed to!
